Many organisations want to become more sustainable but aren’t quite sure where to start. A government funding scheme makes taking that first step easier and covers up to 60 per cent of consultancy costs. In this podcast episode, our partner Boris Lebedev shares his expertise and experiences (german language).
Sustainability is no longer just a nice-to-have, but is becoming a strategic necessity. However, getting started with a structured climate strategy takes time, expertise and money. Boris Lebedev is not only convinced that it is worth it – he can also point to very specific projects, such as that of WKT-Letsch.
What are the practical benefits of sustainability consultancy?
In this podcast episode, Boris discusses the successful consultancy project with WKT-Letsch Produktions- und Handels GmbH in Hanau, a medium-sized specialist in ready-made insulation materials (WKT-Letsch case study). This demonstrates what is possible. Thanks to the consultancy, the company achieved six-figure cost savings through consistent waste prevention, targeted energy efficiency measures and the development of new products, for example using bio-based materials such as mycelium or seaweed. At the same time, the company’s market position improved noticeably. Suppliers and customers responded more positively, and brand value increased.
According to Boris Lebedev, the high level of commitment from the management team was crucial to the success. At the same time, it became clear how important it is to manage the parallel strain on employees caused by day-to-day business during this change process.
What is the funding programme all about?
This is precisely where the german Federal Funding Programme for Energy and Resource Efficiency in Industry (EEW), also known as BAFA Module 5, comes in: a funding programme run by the Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control that provides companies with financial and technical support in developing a sound climate protection strategy.
Key figures at a glance
- Maximum grant of €60,000, non-repayable
- 12-month consultancy period (extendable on request)
- 60% funding rate on a consultancy volume of up to €100,000, depending on company size
BAFA Module 5 and EEW refer to the same programme. It funds external consultancy services over a period of twelve months. The focus is not on the direct implementation of measures, but on strategic groundwork: Where do our emissions come from? How do we achieve climate neutrality by 2045? Which levers have the greatest impact?
The consultancy comprises a detailed energy consumption analysis, strategic and communication advice, and the development of a comprehensive climate strategy, including greenhouse gas emissions from Scope 1 (own combustion), Scope 2 (purchased electricity) and, optionally, Scope 3 (upstream and downstream supply chain). Scopes 1 and 2 are mandatory.
Who is the sustainability consultancy grant scheme intended for?
The grant scheme is specifically aimed at companies that are only just beginning their sustainability journey, rather than those that have already implemented comprehensive climate measures. Companies from manufacturing industries, the service sector, the care sector and many other areas are equally eligible to participate. Above all, it is important that the company is prepared to tackle the issue seriously.
Combining with legal obligations
Companies with an annual energy consumption of over 7.5 GWh are legally obliged to introduce an energy management system in accordance with ISO 50001 or EMAS. BAFA Module 5 can be structured in such a way that the consultancy meets both objectives simultaneously: the funding criteria and the legal requirements – killing two birds with one stone, without duplicating effort.
Who is the sustainability consultancy grant scheme aimed at?
How does the application process work?
The process is less bureaucratic than many expect. First, a preliminary check is carried out. The experts at flow consulting quickly and easily assess whether a company is fundamentally eligible for funding. This depends on initiatives already underway and the size of the company. flow then supports the application process and the entire consultancy process, including direct contact with the funding body. The administrative burden for the company itself therefore remains manageable.
Conclusion: Now is the right time for sustainability consultancy
The path to climate neutrality is still unclear for many companies. BAFA Module 5 offers a structured, financially attractive opportunity to embark on this journey professionally, with external expertise, clear methodology and a grant that does not need to be repaid. Anyone wishing to be prepared for legal requirements whilst simultaneously saving costs, tapping into new market opportunities and communicating credibly should definitely take advantage of this opportunity.
